Inner ghosts, drawn by hand
Giuditta R draws the way memory works. Starting from old family and school photographs, she rebuilds her sitters in graphite until they become strange and familiar at once: ancestral figures still wearing the faces of the children they were. Each drawing withholds a single element in color, a ribbon, a glittering clip, a gilded bow, which pierces the monochrome the way Roland Barthes described the punctum: the detail that wounds. She calls the work a psychosomatic investigation of what families pass down. Exhibited alongside Roger Ballen and Clive Barker, and held in collections from Copenhagen to Mexico City, these 22 works on paper (2012–2019) are now in the US with ARt deCentrale.

Born in Italy and based in Berlin, Giuditta R has shown her work in Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Mexico and the US. She works in graphite, pencils, inks and pigments on paper, building her figures out of dense, restless shading. Her figures stare out of dark grounds, interrupted by a red mouth, a glittering accent, a single written word. She calls them “our inner ghosts.” Her subject is inheritance: the family patterns, secrets and formative experiences each of us carries, which she describes as a ‘mirror effect’ for the viewer.
Not generated. Drawn. Every line is made by hand, and the small inserts are set into the surface one at a time. In an age of instant images, each of these took weeks of work.
These drawings had their US debut in 2023 in Genetic Secrets, a candlelit exhibition by ARt deCentrale in which every visitor carried a single light and stepped close to see.

ARt deCentrale is a decentralized gallery and creative experiences lab, working across physical spaces and online, founded in Northwest Arkansas by independent curator and creative producer Allan Paulose. Without fixed walls, it brings the work of under-recognized artists to new audiences through exhibitions people step into rather than walk past.
Since 2020 it has worked with more than 50 artists and produced more than 50 exhibitions and experiences, including an exhibition space at Interform’s ASSEMBLY Art & Fashion Biennial. It introduced Giuditta R’s work to American audiences with Genetic Secrets, an exhibition series covered by the NWA Democrat-Gazette and KNWA.
